Tina Turner is a name that is almost completely synonymous with female rock singing. From her debut more than fifty years ago, she has made a name in the rock and roll business by providing consistently listenable material. After being with the Ike Turner and his Kings of Rhythm Band for two years, she got her break as Anna Mae Bullock by stepping up to record the vocals of A Fool in Love in 1960 which, coincidentally, turned out to be a #2 hit that sent her career skyrocketing.
Anna Mae Bullock was born in the small town of Nutbush, Tennessee and grew up there going to a school her great great-uncle sold the property for below market. Even after her parents split and her mother moved to St. Louis, the precocious Anna refused and subsequently lived with her grandmother until her death.
Soon after her success, Ike Turner changed her name to Tina Turner and also modified his band’s name to the Ike and Tina Turner Revue. From here the sky was Tina Turner’s limit and she not only became successful, but found love with Ike. Their relationship lasted for approximately twenty years when Tina left (split 1976 but didn’t divorce until 1978) because of spousal abuse. At which point she virtually disappeared.
In the mid 1980′s Tina Turner made a comeback however, and even played in a few films. However, her biggest success was yet to come when she set out on her 50 Years of Tina Turner Tour and sold out nearly every single show making it one of the largest selling tours of all time.
